Mortally wounded, Arthur lies dead in Avalon, his head cradled in the lap of his sister, Queen Morgan le Fay, the golden canopy overhead emblazoned with scenes from the Grail quest. Inspired by Malory’s Morte d’Arthur , Burne-Jones spent the last seventeen years of his life finishing the piece.
