sometimes i think the writers of merlin just dont actually understand what genocide is because WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE

like they’re trying to pass it off as “HE STILL HAS GOOD QUALITIES he just killed a bunch of people once”

except that’s not what genocide is, a bunch of people dying.

genocide is attacking and slaughtering entire villages. genocide is concentration camps and gas chambers. genocide is starvation. genocide is purposefully spreading infectious diseases. genocide is labor camps, genocide is forced marches, genocide is political prisoners, genocide is mass rape, genocide is bashing infants heads in against trees. genocide is the holocaust, the cambodian killing fields and the khmer rouge, the rape of nanking, cannibalism in the congo, the iraqi kurds, the sabra and shatila massacres, holdomor, the stolen generation of aborigines, the partition of india, the great purge, the armenian genocide. genocide is cannibalism, skinning people alive, raping children, firebombing places of worship.

genocide is not something you forgive.

imagine there’s a dictator. he slaughters tens of thousands of an ethnic group. he drowns their children, raids their villages. his soldiers confiscate grain until people starve, rape women and young boys.

this dictator’s heir, his only son, helps him. on at least one occasion he participates in the slaughter of children. he condones public executions. he watches people burned alive. he campaigns against the rebels.

the dictator is assassinated. his son takes power. he goes to the remains of the ethnic group he has helped slaughter and apologizes for his father’s crimes. he will leave them in peace, he says. he has helped kill their men, burn their women and drown their children but now he will leave them in peace, because he’s sorry.

and all he can wonder, as the rebels sense his weakness and launch a siege against the capital, is “why do they hate me so much? what have i ever done to them?”
